The Official Lego Film and TV Series List

Is there a cooler company on the planet than Lego? We think not!

Lego has transcended the toy industry into being a major social and cultural institution. There is no better example of this than the Lego brands successful and varied adventure into film and television. The company has a filmography of official Lego feature films, television series, documentaries and shorts that would make a successful standalone business on its own merits.

The use of Lego inspired films and videos date back to the 1970s when amateur filmmakers and Lego fans created “Brickfilms” using Lego bricks and figures using stop-motion cameras. It was not until 2003 the Lego company licensed it first official Lego film production with the Bionicle: Mask of Light, a 70-minute direct-to-video science-fiction feature based on the Bionicle toy range. The film was produced by the Creative Capers studio in conjunction with the Lego groups film and TV department and distributed by Miramax Films.

The Bionicle film series continued with a total of four films and became the catalyst for a wealth of official productions based on Lego properties. This includes the Lego DC Comics Super Heroes, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Lego Star Wars, Lego Clutch Powers, Lego Ninjago and Lego Nexo Knights to name but a few.

In 2011 Warner Bros. gave the green light for a Lego based movie, which had been conceived by producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee a few years earlier. The Lego Movie was finally released in 2014 to critical and commercial success and spawned the Lego Movie franchise, with a Lego Batman Movie Spin-off and a Lego Movie Sequel set for 2019.

The Lego Movie itself boasted a star-studded cast of voice actors, with Chris Pratt playing the movies protagonist Emmet Brickowski, Will Ferrel as the main antagonist Lord Business, Liam Neeson as a split personality policeman, Morgan Freeman as Vitruvius, a blind old wizard and Master Builder, Channing Tatum as Superman, and Will Arnett as Batman. It was partly due to Arnett’s excellent and comical vocal performance as Batman, that helped push the Lego Batman Movie spin-off.

The Lego Movie was awarded a BAFTA for the best-animated film as well as Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. The films theme song “Everything is Awesome” was critically acclaimed and had toddlers and parents stomping their feet around the word to the annoyingly catchy tune. The movie changed the face of Lego on film into a global phenomenon, with much more to come.
