We have been champing at the bit to get our hands on the new Rockstar Games title, Red Dead Redemption 2. The prequel to the popular 2010 western open-world adventure, Red Dead Redemption, and the third game in the Red Dead franchise.
The game will center on the adventures of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw with the Van de Linde gang. You can expect to see familiar faces such as John Marston and his future wife Abigail, and Dutch Van der Linde from previous games. As well as a sprawling prairies and mountains, wild towns and salons, and a Kookey assortment of characters.
In Rockstar Games own words:
“America, 1899. The end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. Those who will not surrender or succumb are killed. After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.”

There is a great deal of speculation regarding a multiplayer online mode in the new game, and while there is no concrete confirmation from Rockstar Games, it seems likely.
Multiplayer is seen as a controversial step for Red Dead fans who appreciate the lone cowboy atmospherics involved with wandering the open world. However, with the popularity of the multiplayer mode in Grand Theft Auto it was a logical step for Rockstar. It seems unlikely Rockstar will incorporate a split screen option, preferring to keep the game play online only for multiplayer.
The risk with online multiplayer worlds is the potential to become too congested and chaotic. Rockstar will need to get the balance right with setting player participation levels. We are excited to see how this plays out, as there is a lot of potential for a large wild west themed multiplayer, especially with the popularity of the recent Westworld TV series. A clan based system would be popular, especially if there are good base locations to hold-up and modify.
It is imperative that Rockstar maintains the quality of the single player campaign mode to keep its core fanbase happy. The official trailers seem to represent the single player mode, and with the content on display it looks like we won’t be disappointed.
