Fans of the Predator franchise have experienced some ups and downs since the original Predator hit the big screen in 1987. The latest installment promises to be faithful to the original, and deliver an action-packed reboot spectacular, giving hope to the legions of faithful fans. Opinions were mixed after the release of the teaser trailer, but with the red band trailer now available (check it out above) things are really hotting up in the Predator universe. We will keep you updated will all the latest pre-release news, updates and rumors with this post.
The Predator Synopsis
The official 20th Century Fox synopsis.
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
What We Know So Far
The initial teaser trailer (see below) was released at the 2018 CinemaCon in April. During the event, it was reported that director Shane Black revealed the movie is set in the 1990’s between Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010).
The teaser trailer shows a young boy, Rory McKenna (Jacob Tremblay) opening a delivery package in which he finds a predator face mask and wrist gauntlet. While playing with the wrist gauntlet he inadvertently releases a locator beacon or control device that summons a predator spacecraft to earth.
We also see an interrogation of former 75th Ranger, Quinn McKenna, by an unknown government agent. During a covert mission in Mexico, McKenna had discovered an alien spacecraft and his team were wiped out by a Predator alien. Quinn McKenna is the father of Rory, so we can assume Quinn retrieved the Predator equipment and forwarded the package to his son, possibly as an insurance policy of his alien encounter.
Will Traeger (Sterling K. Brown) is the agent who jails Quinn and seems to have knowledge of Predator activity on earth. Traeger eventually enlists McKenna and a squad of military misfits for a Predator-hunting mission.
The Predators in the new movie are genetically enhanced, having evolved by combining DNA with other species in the universe. The trailer shows a rather large Predator ripping a smaller Predator through a wall. This ties in with the emergence of these “Super Predators” in Predators (2010).
We will also see the return of the gruesome “Hell-Hounds”. The Predator hounds controlled by a Tracker Predator as seen in Predators, but the hounds will be re-designed especially for the new movie.
Director – Shane Black
Black is no stranger to the Predator franchise having played the role of Rich Hawkins in the original Predator (1987). Hawkins was the radio operator for Major “Dutch” Schaefer’s (Arnold Schwarzenegger) team of ill-fated mercenaries, and the first member of the team to be killed by the Predator.
The same year that Black appeared in Predator he wrote the script for Lethal Weapon in six weeks. Black also wrote the sequel, Lethal Weapon 2, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. As a director his most notable work is the Marvel superhero film Iron Man 3.
Black is expected to return the Predator franchise to its roots, with a heavy 80’s action movie influence. Don´t be surprised if we see further tie-ins with the original movie.
Writers – Fred Dekker & Shane Black
Shane Black co-wrote The Predator script with Fred Dekker with whom he had previously co-written the script for The Monster Squad. Dekker also wrote Night of the Creeps and directed and co-wrote RoboCop 3 with Frank Miller.
Producer – John Davis
John Davis is the founder and chairman of Los Angeles-based Davis Entertainment, and has been a producer on more than 100 feature films. This includes all three of the previous Predator movies, Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010) as well as the two crossover films, Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007).
Boyd Holbrook as Quinn McKenna – Benicio del Toro was originally cast, but later had to back out due to scheduling conflicts. James Franco had earlier turned down the role. Holbrook played DEA agent Steve Murphy in the first season of the Netflix series Narcos.
Yvonne Strahovski as Emily McKenna, Quinn’s ex-wife and the mother to Rory McKenna.
Jacob Tremblay as Rory McKenna, Quinn and Emily’s son. Rory has a form of autism and is bullied in school. He becomes an important player in the fight against the Predators due to his abnormal ability to learn languages
Sterling K. Brown as Will Traeger, a government agent who initially jails Quin McKenna, before using him to form a special Predator-hunting unit from a group of misfit military operators.
Trevante Rhodes as Nebraska Williams, Quin McKenna’s best friend and a former Marine who enlists in the special Predator-hunting unit.
Keegan-Michael Key as Coyle, a man who teams up with the predator-hunting unit.
Thomas Jane as Baxley, a military veteran from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars suffering from PTSD.
Alfie Allen as Lynch, a former Marine who is part of the Predator-hunting unit. Best known for his role as Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones TV series.
Augusto Aguilera as Nettles, a Former Blackhawk helicopter pilot.
Olivia Munn as Casey Bracket, a disgruntled science teacher who is an unlikely addition to the special predator-hunting unit.
Jake Busey as the son of Peter Keyes. Peter Keyes was the government agent and head of the top-secret OWLF in Predator 2 (1990). Keyes was played by the actor Gary Busey, and the real-life father of Jake Busey.
Edward James Olmos as a military general.
Niall Matter as Sapir
In the past Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson was rumored to be in contention for a lead part in the reboot. To play a similar role as Schwarzenegger in the original. However, this did not materialize.
Conor Mcgregor the Irish MMA fighter was offered a small part in the movie which he declined.
It has been heavily suggested throughout the process that Arnold Schwarzenegger would return in some capacity, most probably in a cameo role. Unfortunately, for fans of the original, this now seems unlikely.
The Predator Release Date
The Predator movie is set for release on September the 14th, 2018. The film will also be released in IMAX theaters.
